The problem

When the weather turns, a district has a few hours before the school day to judge whether its roads are safe.

What we built

We built a progressive web app for authorised reporters to file road conditions from where they stand. Each report says whether the road is passable and records ice, snow, rain and wind, with photos and video. Reports appear on a live map for the superintendent, who decides which schools close and sends the notice to everyone as a push notification. Each person sees only what their role allows.

The system, redrawn

A road-conditions app and its live map, redrawnA phone shows a report form with a switch between passable and impassable, four weather condition icons, three photo squares and a send button. A thin line carries the report to a larger screen behind it, where an abstract map of roads and a lake shows reports as pins: navy filled pins for impassable roads, outlined pins for passable ones, and one highlighted pin. A button on the map screen closes schools.Close schoolsPassableImpassableSend
